I’ve been spending plenty of time with Luis over the last few days while I’ve been taking a break from training. Sometimes it’s quite scary just how fast he’s growing up. Anyhow, a couple of things he’s done recently made me laugh.
We were at the video store recently, and Karl had gone in to pick up a DVD. I’d got out of the car to stretch my legs, and Luis was still in his car seat. He asked me for the car keys, and without thinking I handed them over. I must have been distracted, but when Karl came out, he found Luis sat in the car grinning with the doors locked. What were the chances of getting a three year old to press the right button to open the door? Could he understand what we wanted him to do? We spent the next ten minutes or so trying to talk him through it. He pressed the wrong button plenty of times, in between pretending to drop the keys, pretending to fall asleep, and laughing at our frustration. Eventually, we tried a change of strategy, and started eating a packet of sweets. It took him about 3 seconds to get the door open.
Then there was the other day. I’d given Luis a small toy to play with on a car journey, and he was asking where it had come from. So I told him that the elves had brought it. He interrogated me about the details of the story – which elves? When? Why hadn’t he seen them? Where did they get it from? Then he sat and thought for a minute, before pronouncing his verdict: ”Mummy, are you joking? Because I don’t believe you”.
Never underestimate your kids.
