An update

It’s been a crazy week. There’s been another MMA media blip just recently, that I seem to have got caught up in. It started out with a phone call from a nice Daily Mail journalist last week (article here). MMA purists have criticized the article, but personally I was pleasantly surprised. The DM isn’t my usual reading material, and I’ll admit I was expecting the usual “this is outrageous, it should be banned!” comment. Sure, it’s a bit tongue in cheek, and he does insist on calling the sport “cagefighting”, but the tone of the article seemed to be “MMA has arrived. It’s here to stay, and look – some of the people who do it aren’t mindless thugs”.

After that, my phone went mad. I did an interview with Lorraine Kelly to go out on GMTV this morning, and made the centre pages of the Daily Star (fully clothed, I’ll add!) It even got more column inches than Alex Reid’s cross dressing, which I consider a minor victory :-P

For the MMA fans out there, there’s also a new interview up on MMA Spot.

While the media attention can be fun for a while, what I’m really interested in is getting a fight. And things have been moving on that front too. We had to turn down the offer of a big fight in Japan for the end of this month – sadly the conditions weren’t right and it was too short notice. But there are several possibilities that my management are looking into. Bellator are promising to be back early in 2010, and have plans for a four woman tournament at 125 lbs. There’s also talk of me possibly headlining a show in the UK which would be great. I haven’t had the opportunity to fight in this country since Cagewarriors Night of Champions back in 2005.

In other news – I’ve got a Canadian fighter Sarah Moras staying with me for a few months to train. She’s crazy – in a good way – and I think she has the potential to go a long way in this sport. We’re working towards her first professional MMA fight against Danielle West on 22nd November at Kayo-MMA. If anyone out there would like tickets to come and watch her, drop me an email.

I’ve had a lot of people asking me where I’m training at the moment. The short answer is that I’ve been working with a number of different people, but it’s gradually coming together and I’m really happy with the training I have now. My MMA coaches are Pete Irving and Paul McVeigh. I’m also working closely with Billy Cooper (wrestling), Jimmy Kelly (boxing) and Paul Tite (Muay Thai). Ollie Richardson from FighterStrength is taking care of my strength and conditioning. They are all superb, and I feel privileged to be working with such a great team of people.

There are many, MANY other people out there who have helped me out with my training, offering support and advice. I won’t name names, but you know who you are. I’m very grateful to all of you, and to the friends who have stuck by me over the last few months.

I’m looking forward to getting back out there and reminding people of what I can do :)

Hey Rosi. My name is Nilufer and I’m a feature writer for Best magazine. We would love to do a piece about you and why you got into cage fighting and I wondered if you might be interested? If you could give me a call on 0207 339 4592 or email me at nilufer.atik@natmags.co.uk and let me know that would be great. I think your story would really inspire our readers.

    Hi Rosi,

Ended up here after seeing you on the PHD site, and have spent the last few minutes reading through the blog. You have had some year! From the above it looks like the next few months will be more positive for you, glad to see things are back on track with training etc as well.

Pop in on the PHD Forum if you have the free time, it feels like me and Belly are the only ones there sometimes!

    Regards, and good luck,

Gavin Laird (PHD Forum Mod / one time strength coach).

    Rosi,

I really enjoyed putting together our interview. I look forward to seeing you the next time you are in the States.

Good luck, and hopefully the recent media blitz will bring a slew of fight offers.

If anyone out there deserves to be recognized, it would be you.
